MEETING YOUR PLANTCESTORS
As I’ve grown in life, in my path, as a mother and a daughter I think about how “separate” my childhood was from others. I did not grow up with the traditions of my lineage. I always felt like I was missing out or I wasn’t special because I didn’t get to receive the passed down traditions from my Grandmothers. Growing up it was me and my Mom, and since it was just the two of us I was alone most of the time. My mother worked…. a lot. My Mother is a very strong, independent, hard working Women which are some of the reasons I look up to her so much. Mom’s family all lived in Kentucky, an interesting mix of Scotts-Irish, Cherokee and Crow American Indian, at least that’s what we thought. Recently we found out that part of my mothers family is actually German, originally Old Prussian. I used to have such a love hate relationship driving to see them every year, but my favorite part was staying at Grannie and Papaws house. Papaw and me loved watching the Smurffs together on Saturday mornings in his favorite rocker, even though he was not my biological Great Grandfather he still treated me like I was his favorite. The area of Kentucky they lived in was not exactly considered the Appalachia area, but it was close we even had to drive through the mountains in order to get there. The Granny Folk Wisdom sure did shine through with the women in my family though that’s for sure, my Granny was the all knowing Matriarch. I’m still learning about my Ancestry on my mother’s side and the Plantcestors I have on this side. For whatever reason this side of my ancestry is one of the hardest I have had to come to terms with, whether that’s due to the prominent acceptance to basic cultural whiteness and forgetting of ancestral traditions and cultural heritage, or the lack of learning and building of a connection to our Cherokee, Crow, Germanic, and Scotts-Irish Heritage.
For the most part I have some good memories visiting my Moms family, but since we lived so far away I don’t have as many as I would hope. Unfortunately the lack of maternal tradition was high it seemed growing up, between a huge difference in culture and lack of maternal feminine influence was obvious for both me and my Mother. Since a large part of my Mothers life was spent on her own, it’s easy to see how traditions and cultural ways of life get easily lost and taken over by a more modern lifestyle. In many ways that is good, but to loose your roots is to loose connection with yourself. I will say that no matter how much she will try to cover up her Wise Woman ways they still shine through greatly. A part of me feels that’s what pulled her back to Kentucky, to reclaim a part of what has been lost for so long. My Mother always said that the Women in our family have always had a sort of “Sight”, that we have a higher Intuition then most. Prophetic dreams, visions, and gut feelings have always been strong in my life, there would be days as a child my Mom and I wouldn’t do certain things because she felt off about it. This knowledge my Mom had also applied to her connection to the Earth, she is the one who taught me how to churn and connect with the dirt that you are asking to bring you prosperous growth, and to pay attention to the Moon as well as weather patterns when gardening. If you ask my Mom about these things she will nervously laugh while either brush you off and ignore you or simply loose eye contact with you and say everyone has some sort of “intuition”, but I can guarantee that any association with Magic of any kind will shut her down instantly. No matter how much my Mother denies her connection to a more magical way, I will always know her true inner wisdom lies deep in her blood and bones.
My Father was never really apart of my life, he came and went as he pleased when I was little but as I got older it was like he was the invisible man. I remember growing up and people asking me if I was mad or upset because my Dad wasn’t there for me and to that my response was always “you cannot miss what you never fully had”. The times I got to spend with that side of my family will always be special to me though no matter how I was connected, unfortunately because of the lack of interest my Dad had in my upbringing made it not possible for me to truly know that side of my family and that is what makes me sad. Even though the times were short and intermittent, the things I learned from my Gigi will always be treasured. Gigi taught me things like how to make the perfect sauce and spaghetti, and that it’s not Christmas time without Pizzelle. My Fathers side was a crazy loud mix of Irish and Neapolitan, Italian. My Gigi’s parents and Grand parents came over here from Naples Italy, and my Grandfathers parents came over here from County Courke Ireland. I have always had such a strong pull to my Italian ancestry, even before I realized that I was named after my Gigi, Vivian Marie Maggio, and that I was born in the month of August, which is My Gigi’s Grandmothers name, Augusta Maggio. The area of Campania is my Gigi’s family was from and was know for Janara, Medicine Women and Men, Healers, and Oralces. It was an area of Southern Italy that was full of forest and mountains, where it was not uncommon to walk upon many medicinal and magical plants. Poisonous Plants were also prominent in the area, and so was the use of different flying ointments. Looking at this it is no surprise why I am so heavily connected to Plants, especially the Banes. Mandrakes are know to grow on these mountains and let’s just say I have quite an obsession with them.
Now, you are probably wondering why is this important when we are supposed to be talking about our Plancestors and getting to know them. Well in order to truly know your Plantcestors you must know yourself and your roots.
As you can see my roots are dispersed and jumbled a little, which is ok because that means I have a beautiful ancestral connection to many things. I’m not going to lie to you and say it did not take time for me to come to terms with who I am because it did. It took me years to except my ancestry, all of it, to honor and see it as a sacred part of myself. Now when I look at my ancestral roots I liken it to a Rue plant, the roots are many and they grow in hundreds of directions, twisting and turning in the oddest ways. When a Rue plant takes root it spreads and has many offshoots, sometimes it’s hard to tell what stalk was the first.
The Rue Plant is one of my most sacred Plancestors. It was one of the first plants I felt a magical connection with, it was a plant that I felt like I’ve known for years. Meeting the Rue spirit and growing with it over the years has brought me to a deeper understanding of my connection to my ancestry. In my channeled sessions with rue her Spirit has shown me many things that she has been used for over the years, between protection rituals of fumigation, Initiatory rituals in water with bundles of rue to asperge. Rue is also what the charm Cima de Ruta is, sometimes called Cimaruta, it is a charm that is worn for protection. Originally a charm that was hung over a baby’s crib to protect against the Evil Eye and Is now widely known and used. I wear my Cima de Ruta everyday for protection, blessings, and as a symbol of connection to my Italian ancestry as well as The Rue Plantcestors. Rue bundles can be hung around your house and wrapped in red thread for protection, cleansing, and blessings. This is one of the most powerful plants I have ever met and I continue to learn new things from the Rue spirit.
Rosemary is another very important plant for me and my Ancestral Heritage. The spirit of Rosemary is truly fascinating and the energy of the plant is untouchable. This plant has been used for hundreds of years for so many things, whether it’s magical or medicinal, it’s a powerful plant. Rosemary has even been used as a deodorizer. Connecting with Rosemary is such a beautiful experience, every time I work with the plant I feel this overwhelming feeling of love and connection to the Earth Mother and Feminine Divine. One of my first channeling sessions with this plant she told me to call her Rosematta, since that day I have in fact called the spirit of Rosemary, Rosematta. Rosemary literally means “Dew of the Sea”, it’s a plant that is deeply connected to the Divine Feminine. Rosemary is a spirit that wants to help us connect to the Ultimate Womb Center and to the Great Mother Goddesses, every time I work with it I immediately feel La Signora Del Gioco and Mamma Cybele with me because they are both very connected to the spirit of Rosemary and vice versa.
The list of my Plantcestors could go on for ever, there are so many plants that I have deep rooted connections to that play apart in my lineage. How do you find and connect to your Plantcestors though? First you need to start by learning who you are, what are you drawn to in plants? Where do you live right now, how long have you lived there? Is there any plants, herbs, or spices that are used prominently in your family or household? Are there any plants or herbs you are told not to ever use, if so why? These are just a few questions that will get you thinking about your home traditions in regards to familiar plants. After you have looked at what’s close to home take a look at your Ancestral Heritage, and Cultural Traditions about plants. Where is your family from? Where are your Ancestors from? How many different countries and continents is it? What are the traditions in these areas related to plants? What herbs and spices are used prominently in cooking? What herbs and plants were used as medicine? What is the plant and tree folklore like? These are very important questions to understand your roots and plant lineage, once you get a feel and understanding of the plants that relate to your Ancestry look at the answers you have from both sets of questions for yourself, how many similarities are there? Your Plantcestors are always with you and they will make sure you know that one way or another sometimes. Notice the similarities in the plants and connections to you and your roots, now what plants are you most drawn too. Write down the list of plants you are most connected to, then take some time to really look at the plants on the list. Spend time with each plant on the list, connecting to each one on an energetic level. If you are able to get parts of the physical plants, granted that it is safe to do so and they are not poisonous or to cause you any kind of reaction. If for any reason it’s not safe to get the physical plant, or you are just not able too then a picture or drawing of the plant works just as well. You really do not need anything to connect with the Spirits of the plant realm but having a physical representation can help strengthen the connection. Spend some time every day with your Plantcestors in the beginning if you can to help strengthen your relationship to them, journey with them, channel them, asking them questions and listening for the answer, you can even just sit and ask them to shoe you what you must learn. As your relationship grows I would suggest having a special place in or around your home that you use to journey and work with your Plantcestors, similar to your Ancestral Altar, you could even connect this space to your Ancestor Altar if that helps you connect more.
Partaking in trance journeys with your Plant Guides and Plantcestors is an experience like no other. We are connecting to the wild parts of ourselves and Mother Nature to grow and learn through the powers of the Earth Mother and Plant Realms. To start the journey clear out the space in your home that you can relax and let go in, preferably by a window or in an area wher you have plants, or if possible go outside in a secluded area but make sure that this is somewhere completely safe and not where you will be disturbed. Have a representation or physical plant with you of one of your Plantcestors, put this next to you the whole time. Lay down or sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take a few deep breathes. In through your nose out through your mouth. Now see yourself surrounded by starlight, watch as the light encircles your, then see the light turn into vines, call to your Guides and any ally’s you wish to watch over you on this journey, call to Mother Earth and ask for her divine guidance, call to the spirit of your Plantcestor who you wish to join you. Now see the vines that have completely encircled you almost like a dome shape around you, feel the vine dome start sucking into the ground, sucking you underneath the surface so you are traveling underground in this vine dome shaped vehicle, feel yourself move under the surface for you are traveling to the plant spirit realm, you feel the dome has stopped moving and you can feel everything as the dome starts to emerge to the surface, the vines start to loosen above and around you, they start to disperse and disappear, you notice your surroundings and where you are, you look all around and see the beauty of this place, there’s millions of plants and trees all around you and all different kinds, the air is so fresh and sweet almost. And the feeling of this land just feels right, you see in front of you is a small open field of your favorite plants, in the center of the field is a circle of 9 stones and each stone has a plant growing out of it, you see *Rosemary, Mandrake, Henbane, Rue, Garlic, Mugwort, Parsley, Mint, and St. John’s Wort*, in the center of the stones you see a big tall stone that with a hole in the center you hear something say to touch the stone because that is where your Plantcestor is, so you close your eyes and touch the stone with both hands, when you open your eyes your Plantcestor is standing tall in front of you on the stone, you speak and ask any questions that you had, or simply listen to whatever wisdom your Plantcestor needed to share. After you have learned everything you can from your guide you thank her as she disperses into the rock which is absorbed into the land, waiting for your return. All the plants and rocks disperse as well, you walk back to where you left your vine dome, when you stand in the center it encircled you and wraps all around you then sucks you into the Earth, when you reemerge back to where you started the vines unwind and disappear into the ground again waiting for your next journey. Thank all your Guides and Plantcestors for everything and slowly bring yourself back. If you feel called, record your experience with your Plantcestors so you may return after you have set with the information.
I hope you enjoyed this small look into knowing and working with our Plantcestors. Please share your experiences with your own. So much love to you all.
***These plants are my guides that I see during these workings, you do not have to use the same ones. If you feel called to changing them please do what works best for you.***
