MEETING YOUR PLANTCESTORS

As I’ve grown in life, in my path, as a mother and a daughter I think about how “separate” my childhood was from others. I did not grow up with the traditions of my lineage. I always felt like I was missing out or I wasn’t special because I didn’t get to receive the passed down traditions from my Grandmothers. Growing up it was me and my Mom, and since it was just the two of us I was alone most of the time. My mother worked…. a lot. My Mother is a very strong, independent, hard working Women which are some of the reasons I look up to her so much. Mom’s family all lived in Kentucky, an interesting mix of Scotts-Irish, Cherokee and Crow American Indian, at least that’s what we thought. Recently we found out that part of my mothers family is actually German, originally Old Prussian. I used to have such a love hate relationship driving to see them every year, but my favorite part was staying at Grannie and Papaws house. Papaw and me loved watching the Smurffs together on Saturday mornings in his favorite rocker, even though he was not my biological Great Grandfather he still treated me like I was his favorite. The area of Kentucky they lived in was not exactly considered the Appalachia area, but it was close we even had to drive through the mountains in order to get there. The Granny Folk Wisdom sure did shine through with the women in my family though that’s for sure, my Granny was the all knowing Matriarch. I’m still learning about my Ancestry on my mother’s side and the Plantcestors I have on this side. For whatever reason this side of my ancestry is one of the hardest I have had to come to terms with, whether that’s due to the prominent acceptance to basic cultural whiteness and forgetting of ancestral traditions and cultural heritage, or the lack of learning and building of a connection to our Cherokee, Crow, Germanic, and Scotts-Irish Heritage.

For the most part I have some good memories visiting my Moms family, but since we lived so far away I don’t have as many as I would hope. Unfortunately the lack of maternal tradition was high it seemed growing up, between a huge difference in culture and lack of maternal feminine influence was obvious for both me and my Mother. Since a large part of my Mothers life was spent on her own, it’s easy to see how traditions and cultural ways of life get easily lost and taken over by a more modern lifestyle. In many ways that is good, but to loose your roots is to loose connection with yourself. I will say that no matter how much she will try to cover up her Wise Woman ways they still shine through greatly. A part of me feels that’s what pulled her back to Kentucky, to reclaim a part of what has been lost for so long. My Mother always said that the Women in our family have always had a sort of “Sight”, that we have a higher Intuition then most.  Prophetic dreams, visions, and gut feelings have always been strong in my life, there would be days as a child my Mom and I wouldn’t do certain things because she felt off about it. This knowledge my Mom had also applied to her connection to the Earth, she is the one who taught me how to churn and connect with the dirt that you are asking to bring you prosperous growth, and to pay attention to the Moon as well as weather patterns when gardening. If you ask my Mom about these things she will nervously laugh while either brush you off and ignore you or simply loose eye contact with you and say everyone has some sort of “intuition”, but I can guarantee that any association with Magic of any kind will shut her down instantly.  No matter how much my Mother denies her connection to a more magical way, I will always know her true inner wisdom lies deep in her blood and bones.

My Father was never really apart of my life, he came and went as he pleased when I was little but as I got older it was like he was the invisible man. I remember growing up and people asking me if I was mad or upset because my Dad wasn’t there for me and to that my response was always “you cannot miss what you never fully had”. The times I got to spend with that side of my family will always be special to me though no matter how I was connected, unfortunately because of the lack of interest my Dad had in my upbringing made it not possible for me to truly know that side of my family and that is what makes me sad. Even though the times were short and intermittent, the things I learned from my Gigi will always be treasured. Gigi taught me things like how to make the perfect sauce and spaghetti, and that it’s not Christmas time without Pizzelle. My Fathers side was a crazy loud mix of Irish and Neapolitan, Italian. My Gigi’s parents and Grand parents came over here from Naples Italy, and my Grandfathers parents came over here from County Courke Ireland. I have always had such a strong pull to my Italian ancestry, even before I realized that I was named after my Gigi, Vivian Marie Maggio, and that I was born in the month of August, which is My Gigi’s Grandmothers name, Augusta Maggio. The area of Campania is my Gigi’s family was from and was know for Janara, Medicine Women and Men, Healers, and Oralces. It was an area of Southern Italy that was full of forest and mountains, where it was not uncommon to walk upon many medicinal and magical plants. Poisonous Plants were also prominent in the area, and so was the use of different flying ointments. Looking at this it is no surprise why I am so heavily connected to Plants, especially the Banes. Mandrakes are know to grow on these mountains and let’s just say I have quite an obsession with them.

Now, you are probably wondering why is this important when we are supposed to be talking about our Plancestors and getting to know them. Well in order to truly know your Plantcestors you must know yourself and your roots.

As you can see my roots are dispersed and jumbled a little, which is ok because that means I have a beautiful ancestral connection to many things. I’m not going to lie to you and say it did not take time for me to come to terms with who I am because it did. It took me years to except my ancestry, all of it, to honor and see it as a sacred part of myself. Now when I look at my ancestral roots I liken it to a Rue plant, the roots are many and they grow in hundreds of directions, twisting and turning in the oddest ways. When a Rue plant takes root it spreads and has many offshoots, sometimes it’s hard to tell what stalk was the first.

The Rue Plant is one of my most sacred Plancestors. It was one of the first plants I felt a magical connection with, it was a plant that I felt like I’ve known for years. Meeting the Rue spirit and growing with it over the years has brought me to a deeper understanding of my connection to my ancestry. In my channeled sessions with rue her Spirit has shown me many things that she has been used for over the years, between protection rituals of fumigation, Initiatory rituals in water with bundles of rue to asperge. Rue is also what the charm Cima de Ruta is, sometimes called Cimaruta, it is a charm that is worn for protection. Originally a charm that was hung over a baby’s crib to protect against the Evil Eye and Is now widely known and used. I wear my Cima de Ruta everyday for protection, blessings, and as a symbol of connection to my Italian ancestry as well as The Rue Plantcestors. Rue bundles can be hung around your house and wrapped in red thread for protection, cleansing, and blessings. This is one of the most powerful plants I have ever met and I continue to learn new things from the Rue spirit.

Rosemary is another very important plant for me and my Ancestral Heritage. The spirit of Rosemary is truly fascinating and the energy of the plant is untouchable. This plant has been used for hundreds of years for so many things, whether it’s magical or medicinal, it’s a powerful plant. Rosemary has even been used as a deodorizer. Connecting with Rosemary is such a beautiful experience, every time I work with the plant I feel this overwhelming feeling of love and connection to the Earth Mother and Feminine Divine. One of my first channeling sessions with this plant she told me to call her Rosematta, since that day I have in fact called the spirit of Rosemary, Rosematta. Rosemary literally means “Dew of the Sea”, it’s a plant that is deeply connected to the Divine Feminine. Rosemary is a spirit that wants to help us connect to the Ultimate Womb Center and to the Great Mother Goddesses, every time I work with it I immediately feel La Signora Del Gioco and Mamma Cybele with me because they are both very connected to the spirit of Rosemary and vice versa.

The list of my Plantcestors could go on for ever, there are so many plants that I have deep rooted connections to that play apart in my lineage. How do you find and connect to your Plantcestors though? First you need to start by learning who you are, what are you drawn to in plants? Where do you live right now, how long have you lived there? Is there any plants, herbs, or spices that are used prominently in your family or household? Are there any plants or herbs you are told not to ever use, if so why? These are just a few questions that will get you thinking about your home traditions in regards to familiar plants. After you have looked at what’s close to home take a look at your Ancestral Heritage, and Cultural Traditions about plants. Where is your family from? Where are your Ancestors from? How many different countries and continents is it? What are the traditions in these areas related to plants? What herbs and spices are used prominently in cooking? What herbs and plants were used as medicine? What is the plant and tree folklore like? These are very important questions to understand your roots and plant lineage, once you get a feel and understanding of the plants that relate to your Ancestry look at the answers you have from both sets of questions for yourself, how many similarities are there? Your Plantcestors are always with you and they will make sure you know that one way or another sometimes. Notice the similarities in the plants and connections to you and your roots, now what plants are you most drawn too. Write down the list of plants you are most connected to, then take some time to really look at the plants on the list. Spend time with each plant on the list, connecting to each one on an energetic level. If you are able to get parts of the physical plants, granted that it is safe to do so and they are not poisonous or to cause you any kind of reaction. If for any reason it’s not safe to get the physical plant, or you are just not able too then a picture or drawing of the plant works just as well. You really do not need anything to connect with the Spirits of the plant realm but having a physical representation can help strengthen the connection. Spend some time every day with your Plantcestors in the beginning if you can to help strengthen your relationship to them, journey with them, channel them, asking them questions and listening for the answer, you can even just sit and ask them to shoe you what you must learn.  As your relationship grows I would suggest having a special place in or around your home that you use to journey and work with your Plantcestors, similar to your Ancestral Altar, you could even connect this space to your Ancestor Altar if that helps you connect more.

Partaking in trance journeys with your Plant Guides and Plantcestors is an experience like no other. We are connecting to the wild parts of ourselves and Mother Nature to grow and learn through the powers of the Earth Mother and Plant Realms. To start the journey clear out the space in your home that you can relax and let go in, preferably by a window or in an area wher you have plants, or if possible go outside in a secluded area but make sure that this is somewhere completely safe and not where you will be disturbed. Have a representation or physical plant with you of one of your Plantcestors, put this next to you the whole time. Lay down or sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take a few deep breathes. In through your nose out through your mouth. Now see yourself surrounded by starlight, watch as the light encircles your, then see the light turn into vines, call to your Guides and any ally’s you wish to watch over you on this journey, call to Mother Earth and ask for her divine guidance, call to the spirit of your Plantcestor who you wish to join you. Now see the vines that have completely encircled you almost like a dome shape around you, feel the vine dome start sucking into the ground, sucking you underneath the surface so you are traveling underground in this vine dome shaped vehicle, feel yourself move under the surface for you are traveling to the plant spirit realm, you feel the dome has stopped moving and you can feel everything as the dome starts to emerge to the surface, the vines start to loosen above and around you, they start to disperse and disappear, you notice your surroundings and where you are, you look all around and see the beauty of this place, there’s millions of plants and trees all around you and all different kinds, the air is so fresh and sweet almost. And the feeling of this land just feels right, you see in front of you is a small open field of your favorite plants, in the center of the field is a circle of 9 stones and each stone has a plant growing out of it, you see *Rosemary, Mandrake, Henbane, Rue, Garlic, Mugwort, Parsley, Mint, and St. John’s Wort*, in the center of the stones you see a big tall stone that with a hole in the center you hear something say to touch the stone because that is where your Plantcestor is, so you close your eyes and touch the stone with both hands, when you open your eyes your Plantcestor is standing tall in front of you on the stone, you speak and ask any questions that you had, or simply listen to whatever wisdom your Plantcestor needed to share. After you have learned everything you can from your guide you thank her as she disperses into the rock which is absorbed into the land, waiting for your return. All the plants and rocks disperse as well, you walk back to where you left your vine dome, when you stand in the center it encircled you and wraps all around you then sucks you into the Earth, when you reemerge back to where you started the vines unwind and disappear into the ground again waiting for your next journey. Thank all your Guides and Plantcestors for everything and slowly bring yourself back. If you feel called, record your experience with your Plantcestors so you may return after you have set with the information.

I hope you enjoyed this small look into knowing and working with our Plantcestors. Please share your experiences with your own. So much love to you all.

***These plants are my guides that I see during these workings, you do not have to use the same ones. If you feel called to changing them please do what works best for you.***

The wisdom of the womb

What is Goddess work? Is it New Age phenomena and Neo pagan practice? Or is it something older then time. I’ve noticed that some people have these assumptions on what being a channel for the Goddess is, that some view it as an easy cop out to ignore the darkness of day to day life, or it’s looked at as a practice of pure “Love and Light” where no deep emotionally painful work must be done! These ideas are the furthest things from the truth. The older ways of Goddess worship are not exactly an easy process, it’s more primal and ancient then we can even almost fathom. It’s perfect balance of Light and Dark, of Love and Hardship. Dedicating your self to being a channel for the Goddess is Life changing work, it’s something that you work for everyday.

When you embrace these older energies it’s literally like your system starts to re-wire itself. It starts by a feeling of connection, and turns into a gradual transformation from inside out, it will change the way you think, the way you view the world and yourself, at some point it might make you feel like you are being ripped from inside out so you can prepare for your “New” Skin.

This transformational Shape-shifting Energy that you will be feeling inside of you growing stronger and stronger is normal, and it’s expected for you to have a shift in the way you perceive things. You will begin to view the world in a larger aspect, pointless arguments and drama will not phase you because as you grow and change you will realize that you are preparing yourself for something bigger and your body is a channel to the essence of the Divine Feminine.

Now the biggest question is usually how do you get to this point? How do you open yourself up to these life changing energies and invite them to come through in your daily life? I’m not going to lie to you, it takes work. It takes Blood, Sweat, and Tears; Literally! But the first step to opening up and channeling the Great Mother is to ask and listen.

That might sound like a ridiculously easy answer. You might think “Wow, is she serious!”, and Yes, I’m very serious. I think back now on all the pointless and expensive tools, kits, oils, and books, all claiming to be the number one way to help get you in touch with your guides, or unlock your gifts to their full potential. All of these items are no help at all if you don’t have one thing, and that’s being in touch. In touch with yourself, your body and mind, and being in touch with the world around you, physically and spiritually. Being in touch also means “Touching”, learn to touch and feel yourself, and listen to what your body wants and needs. The more you do this the easier you will be able to sense and feel what emotions are yours and what’s being transmitted to you from your Guides.

When we start to get in touch with ourselves, our feelings, what we like and don’t like, we get to a point where we start to release everything that has been built up within us. Facing these feelings one on one is very important. What you are doing is bringing everything to the surface that you have buried deep down and never dealt with. This stage might hurt, you might cry uncontrollably for no reason at all, or feel the urge to start screaming at the top of your lungs. Whatever your body and soul is telling you to do, do not hold it in! Let it out, free yourself from the pain of these emotions that have held you prisoner for so long. During this time it can be a great idea to start writing and journaling your feelings and experiences, or even just your dreams. Writing your thoughts down will not only help you release but it will also help you heal.

After some time you might sense a more grounded frame of mind, you will notice that you’ll feel a little bit more balanced everyday. You will sense the freedom in your heart and soul. This is the time to speak your feminine wisdom, think about your blessings and what your grateful for. Thank the Great Mother for blessing us with Nature, and make sure you spend more time in nature everyday. This is key because as you are changing and growing you are channeling the Divine Mother Wisdom and as you are in Nature, you are in her temple. Honor Mother Nature and her gifts and you will honor yourself as well.

Realizing that we are vessels for the Ancient Mother and knowing that we are apart of the Divine is a lesson that must be taught by experiencing the stages of growth. A next stage of owning our Divine Energy is a owning of our Sexuality. Embracing the Sexy side of yourself is something that society has a huge double standard about, you are either not sexy enough or you come across as too sexy. Let me tell you that neither are the case. Embracing our Sexual Energy is not just about having sex, it’s looking in the mirror and loving what you see, it’s knowing how hot and beautiful you are, it’s being able to turn yourself on without even touching yourself. Being at one with your deep sexual desires and letting them out in a healthy way is all part of the embodiment practice that will lead you to your goal.

Embodiment work is the very practice of being in your body and feeling what you are feeling at that moment in time. I was taught to start my embodiment practice on my back, taking slow but deep abdominal breathes, until you feel almost tingly all over. No matter what you must stay breathing. Feel your body from the inside out, you may cry, you may scream, but always breathe. The point is to release all the Negative energy and emotions within and let them out to the world to be let go into the earth. After a few moments roll over to your hands and knees, as you are breathing begin to move your body. Sensually move your hips as if your and Exotic Priestess, or a Sacred Prostitute, the goal is you want to embody the Wild Lioness Archetype that is trying to claw her way out. Feel the sensuality come through every part of you, let it flow from your aura and encompass your world around you. As you do this you are building the very powerful energy of Manifestation and putting yourself front and center to your Womb Wisdom. This is the Great Divine Feminine taking place inside of you, bringing about abundance.

Connecting to our bodies is also connection to what comes of our bodies. Menstrual Blood is by far the most powerful substance, it is the very fluid of life. Learning to work with your Menstrual Blood and Moon Cycle is a very Empowering experience. I know a lot of people are not comfortable collecting their Menstrual Fluid and using it for workings, if that’s the case then that is perfectly fine. Doing things like keeping track of your cycle and journaling the way your body feels through out every stage is a great way to connect. You can even set an intention when you start to feel your body shifting into the Pre Menstrual Stage, and welcome the release of your fluids back to Mother Earth. Menstrual Blood is a fluid of regeneration and life giving so connect with how your body feels during these times.

I have noticed with my Cycle that I am pulled into Trance often after I have started the stage of bleeding. I feel my Guides show me that this is a Powerful time for me and even through all the pain, which I do have quite a bit of since giving birth to my daughter, it is a time for me to connect with them, sacrifice what I don’t need anymore and grow.

There are so many ways to connect to the Wisdom of your Womb. Plants, Herbs, and Trees have been used for hundreds of years in Rural Mother Magic. Start by finding a Plant Ally that you connect with at different stages on the Moon, as well as your Cycle and then journaling your experience and keeping track of what the Plant Spirit is teaching, do this at every stage with a new Plant Ally, after a few Moon Cycles you might notice a pattern, different lessons your Guides are showing you.

I have always been very drawn to Plants, they guide me everyday. Finding your Guides is a personal experience for you though so done be afraid if you are drawn to do these type of exercises with Stones, Animal Spirits, Stars, even Water. The opportunity to learn from Mother Earth and the Divine Feminine Wisdom is endless.

These steps are not a one and done kind of deal, no this is life time work. As we take the steps towards initiation under the Divine Feminine we change with each one, and as time goes on we might start to feel a stagnant period but those my friend’s are some of the most important times to push ourselves forward into the life we want and are willing to work for. Our Womb is full of the Wisdom we wish to know, but we have to be ready to receive the blessings. We must be open and ready to work and listen. The path of a Priestess is no easy one, but it is a path we are all born in front of It’s just up to us is we walk forward or not.

To sit At the red altar

I’ve said once and I will say it a million more times, our Periods are Power. To Sit At The Red Altar is a ritual my guides showed me that I am very moved to share. I feel so primal connecting with these energies. The thing about this is that it is all done in your Mental Space,  it is a Trance / Day Dream if you will, but it can be performed as well.

I personally feel All Goddesses are connected to the Menstrual Cycle, but there are some Goddesses that are so strongly connected to it in a way that must be experienced to understand . Two Goddesses came to me and showed me this ritual but in two different ways, I don’t feel as though they worked together at all, it seems more that they had nothing to do with each other but where both drawn to the energy around me and channeled through me to teach me what to do.

Medusa is known for many things and in many ways, I have always looked up to her but the main time it seems she calls on me is during my cycle. Medusa has been seen as a monster, the snake haired vengeful spirit that was decapitated and her head used as a weapon by a male “hero”. I can tell you that her story is way more then that, she is old, very old, a Female Guide who helps the beaten and betrayed. She is a Guide of protection, rebirth, and ancient Feminine Wisdom.

Ragana is an ancient primal being, now known as a Witch Goddess from the Baltic Region. She is a Goddess for Women, she is a spirit who teaches the art of Magic and using the power of plants for protection, healing, and binding. I am not, as far as I know with and Baltic Blood so it is still a mystery why she had chose me.

Take time for yourself, bathe, smudge yourself, touch and feel yourself. You can make a small altar space with a red cloth, bowl with your menstrual blood, and any other images or items you feel are needed. Now sit with your eyes closed, feel the energy around you, put yourself in a safe mental space, and call to your guides. You can even call on a circle of white and golden light around you to hold this sacred space.

Make sure your intention is clear as you call to your Guides see them with you, if they are like the guides that came to me, and in no way connected to each other do not try to have them work together, let them show you what they want, let them speak to you and don’t try to force anything. Listen to them. As you sit there in a trance state your guides will speak to you and will guide you to do something like make art with your menstrual blood, or mix it with certain items like plants, roots or berries. You will craft your intention and live with it in your mind, body, and soul forever. If you feel called, perform this not just on the astral plane but in the physical plane as well. Using a sacred bowl fill it with a blessed water, like Moon Water, and add some of your Menstrual Blood. This Sacred Moon Blood Mixture can be used in healing and purification, it’s intention is to be used to draw symbols and mantras on charms and talismans, but since this is a personal devotion to oneself, the uses are entirely up to you.

Working with Menstrual Blood is the Most sacred of acts, it is the very life force within All Women. If you have a Plant Familiar I may suggest offering some of the mixture to them as a sign of devotion as well.

When finished I was told to call on the Serpent that lives with us all, the Serpent who lives in our wombs and connects our body’s with Mother Earth, as she shakes and spirals, watch her come up from your womb space and into your heart,  out the top of your head, just to work her way down into the earth and back up into your womb. She fills you with Earthly power and wisdom and know that she lives with you forever and always. Don’t rush these sacred rituals, let them rest in your space, sit with your guides and they will show you the rest of the way. When you are done close your space, thank your Goddess Guides. You can leave them offerings of you Moon Blood mixture, or just Menstrual Blood. Either of them are very potent offerings to give the Goddesses.

Looking back through history we see and hear stories about how Women where considered “Unclean” during their Menstrual Cycles, and where made to sleep in tents or different areas because it was taboo to let them in during this time. It has always seemed more likely that there was a certain fear of Women during this time, the fear of a Women’s Power. The fear of not knowing how a Women of all ages can bleed for days and live. It’s a common tale throughout history that the fear of Feminine Power can lead to some absurd actions.

We as Women are still shamed and made to believe that our Periods are an embarrassing time, something that needs to be hidden and not talked about. The ideas that people have still about this most sacred of times in a Women’s life are anything but evolved. The Menstrual Cycle is a time that a Girl becomes a Women, and ends when a Women becomes a Crone. It is a time once a month that is meant to be honored, a time that we sacrifice so much. This is a Natural Power within us to connect with our Lineage and the Feminine Divine. This is a Powerful time that is meant to be honed, and used to bring Abundance. Harnessing this Power is the Ultimate Ancient Magic.

Every Cycle I get I make something to hone that power, and everyday of my cycle I will chant to the Old Goddesses and put my intention into the Earth and Universe for what I wish to come. Making body oils, soaps, and scrubs are easy ways to take care of yourself and hone the personal power transformation you are going through.

MENSTRUAL CRAMP BODY OIL

☆ Olive Oil and / or Coconut Oil

☆ Peppermint Essential Oil

☆ Lavender Essential Oil

☆ Chamomile Essential Oil

☆ Lavender Buds

☆ Ginger Root

You can add other ingredients as well. Each of these ingredients have been used by Women for years to help was pain and discomfort from cramps to muscle aches. Place all the ingredients in a jar and shake it well, I have used mine almost immediately after making since the majority of ingredients are essential oils. Warming up the oil before applying is also great to help ease those painful cramps. As you are making an oil like this you can take this time to honor your Goddess Guides and Feminine Ancestors, thank them for the blessings they bestow upon you. You can even chant or say a prayer over the ingredients ass you put them together and apply. You can ask your Guides to teach you a prayer or use the one here.

FEMININE PRAYER

“Oh Madonna of the Stars I give honor as you watch over me, Blessed Mother of the Mountains I look to you in all, Most Wonderful Goddess of the Ether and Under I search you out for guidance, Mothers of the Earth, Sky, Sea, and Under, I thank you for your Abundance”

The power we hold in our Menstrual Cycles is something as old as time. If you are looking to connect with your Ancestors of Feminine Lineage Bearers, then look no further then the blessing we all hold. Even though this time can be painful and dreadful in so many ways we must look to the power within in order to grow. This may look like a Curse at first, but I assure you it is a Blessing.

Necromancy and Ancestral Veneration in Naples

To hear the words Necromancy and Italian Culture in the same sentence might not make sense to some, but for those who have been immersed in the traditional practices of Italy all of their lives Necromantic practices are deeply rooted in to every day life. For us Italian Americans across the ocean we have grown into a society that has changed spiritual practices to fit a more “modern world”. The practices that have been so desperately held onto for generations have been changed so much over time, from prayers, chants, healing, folk magic, festivals, dance, and music but when we look close we can still see the ancient practices poking through.

When we look deeply into the traditions we have honored for generations it becomes very clear just how much the ancestors try to keep us engaged and just how truly dedicated we are to keeping them around. The practices of Italy are old, some of them seem to have been recreations of older rituals. Take The Cult of The Dead in Naples for example, The Cult of The Pezzentelle  Souls which seemed to have started around the late 16th century. The women of the area would go to Fontanelle Cemetery  to worship and honor “The Lost Souls”, they would spend time there connecting and honoring the dead, bringing them offerings that have been traditional in Necromancy within Italy and Greek legends like milk, honey, wine, grains, but especially water. It was important to bring the Souls water, more so then anything else because they said the “refreshment”, Refrigerium, Refrische, was the water given to The Pezzentelle Souls to help cool them for they burned in purgatory. Now this was not as simple as going to a grave and giving the dead a glass of water in a pretty glass, no, this was a complex ritual that started before any offerings where given.

According to some there are multiple ways to go about these rituals, the most familiar is that the Women, since this has seemed to be mainly “Women’s Work”, would either go to the ossuary and say a devoted Neapolitan prayer to the Souls and before leaving take the Capuzzella (Skull), home with them. When they returned home they would pray to and for the Pezzentelle Soul and go to bed where they would be placed in a trance to communicate with the Souls of Purgatory. Another tradition is that the Pezzentelle visits the devotee in their dreams first and tells them what they need and also where their Capuzzella is located so they may go to it, clean and polish it, and give the Pezzentelle blessings and offerings.

As one built a close intimate relationship with the Soul they would give offerings like saint cards, rosary beads, oil lamps, candles, and water. The devotee would also of course ask for blessings and material objects to help better their lives. If the devotees needs where not met, then the Capuzzella would be taken back to the ossuary and left there with no offerings since they did not meet the wishes of the devotee.

When the bond between the “adopter” and the Pezzentelle grows, the devotee would take the Capuzzella and build  a Scarabatola around it at the ossuary placing a white handkerchief under it and adding a rosary around it as a symbolic “refreshment” and offering, also stating the Souls status and importance. The Scarabatola is similar to a wooden box usually with beautiful woodwork and engravings. The offerings and refrische where placed on top of it.

I find every thing about this tradition to be fascinating and beautiful, one of the most interesting things to me is the fact that all the main contact the devotee would have with the Pezzentelle is through dreams. It is very similar to a lot of other Necromantic practices around the world and fairy traditions. Let’s look at the practices of communicating with the Lare and the Lasa, they are spirits of Italian descent, one is said to be spirits of the land and the other are ancestral sprits of the hearth and home. The way to commune with them is first you must build a shrine and give plenty of offerings of honey, milk, and wine, another similar offering that is said to be a tradition in some of the most ancient of sources in the Greco-Italian world. After your shrine is built go to bed and you will dream of one or both of these spirits and they will show themselves to you, teaching you secrects of the craft of the wise and telling you how to honor them.  Usually after this step is when you can begin working with them regularly.

There is evidence of many more Cults of The Dead like The Anima Sola in South America, which has similar practices and customs of devotion as the Pezzentelle Cult. I find that interesting because there is a legend that states the worship of Dea Jana (Diana), travelled to Portugal, in Evora there was a large temple dedicated to her worship. The worship of Diana became connected and intertwined with a legend of a Deified Witch named Bruxa Evora (Witch Evora), the legend of this witch travelled all the way to Brazil and other parts of South America. Diana was the Goddess of Witches, witchcraft, the wild, the night, and so much more, she was even seen as a pschopomp in a few legends which would make sense due to her hunting nature. One of the main ways women would say Diana would contact them was in their dreams, in the middle of night she would take them to the woods and teach them the secret art of the craft, healing, casting with Plants, and speaking with the dead.

A Goddess who I feel strongly needs to be mentioned in this article is the sadly almost forgotten Libitina.  Libitina is the Etruscan Goddess of the Dead and Funerals, her very temple was used as the funeral home and where all the sacred tools for burial and grave work where held. She is one if the first visions of the Grim Reaper and Angel of Death. Libitina was envisioned in a black rope covering her face, she had huge black wings that would help her hover and circle over her prey before she would strike. Now I cannot find any evidence on her being connected to either of these cults directly or sites of worship, but I will say that means nothing to me since all of her myths and stories have been lost, so unless we can uncover something that says she is not I feel she strongly is connected to the cults of the dead. There is another Goddess of the dead that is worth mentioning, the Italian / Etruscan Goddess Mania, Goddess of the Dead and mischievous spirits, mother of the Manes and spirits known as lemures. The Manes are spirits of the dead that usually were worshiped as a whole instead of individually. They where seen as Ghost, sometimes beneficent, other times they where feared and worshiped just so they wouldn’t hurt or mess with the living. Still to this day these spirits are revered and honored to keep them happy, if the Spirits are happy and content then they are more likely to help the living with their request.

As we pull apart and look deep into the numerous Cults of The Dead, we can find so many similarities, the practice of Necromancy is not as far away from our daily lives as we think. Think of Saint worship, you are ultimately calling on the dead and praying to them so they may help you in return. Death is a huge part of life for a lot of Italians, mostly Neapolitans. Fontanelle Cemetery is not the only place in Naples that the Cult of The Dead was and is active, the church Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco is still a very active spot for people to come pray and leave offerings to these souls. This is a tradition that will live on forever, especially if the ancestors have anything to say about it.

If you decide you would like to work with the Spirits of the dead like the Pezzentelle or any other, there are a lot of different prayers you can find to call on them. On the website Italian Folk Magick by Mallorie Vaudoise, has a beautiful traditional Neapolitan prayer that can be used at the cemetery. I am a huge believer in our guides will guide us to what we seek and what will fit our needs, speak to your guides and ancestors and they will either show you a prayer you can use to call on them or they will visit you in your dreams and tell you a prayer or instructions on how to proceed with this type of worship and ritual.

I hope this opened up a whole new but old work view for you, things that might seem to be dark and unusual are all very close to our ancestors and lineage traditions. That is what makes the world and all the cultural aspects of it so beautiful. Opening ourselves up to our ancestors and the Spirits of the dead is a sacred an old practice that we should never let die.

From Tract Marks to trance states

     The Beginning

You’re probably wondering why I chose this as the title for the first blog. I feel that in order for you to really understand why I believe so strongly in these practices you have to see where I was without them. This is not the beginning of my path because like I said magick and witchcraft have always been a part of my life even when I wasn’t aware of what to call it. I didn’t have the most “normal” life as a child, that is to say what is normal though. It was just me and my mom but because of that one of the first things I learned was Female Empowerment and that no one is going to take care of you, you are responsible for making your self happy! As I got older a lot of not so great things had happened to me, I was sexually assaulted on more then one occasion over the years and bullied very badly. From the age of 10 I started to “skip” meals which turned into a full blown eating disorder which landed me in the hospital, I started partying very young and using different substances to numb my pain. The older I got the worse every thing got, the only glimpse of beauty I had at the time was giving birth to my amazing son when I was 17 years old. I thought everything would change and turn around after but the saying goes you have to hit bottom before you can crawl up. I made a lot of mistakes, I had an uncontrollable substance abuse problem that no rehab seemed to fix and I made mistake after mistake, my eating disorder got increasingly worse and I knew that if things didn’t change I would die very very young. When I decided I wasn’t going to live like this anymore for me and my son I ended finding out I was pregnant with my daughter a few months later. I decided right then that I needed to get back to my roots, my calling, who I always was but afraid to accept it or show it because of fear of judgment. I was always a Witch. Growing up my mother taught me alot about gardening and the earth, she even had numerous books on herbalism and Native beliefs and spirituality, she said she likes them because it’s a connection to our family since she is part Cherokee, part Crow, and part Irish, but never in a million years would my mother ever classify herself as anything other then a Christian, even though she was the first Wise Woman I ever met. The day I told my mother that I believed in so much more then what our patriarchal religions teach us and that I was following the path of the Ancestors, she was less then thrilled, she was actually very angry and kicked me out of her room and told me she couldn’t look at me. I have to say it was very confusing to me because my mother was an Independent Woman who relied on herself. She listened to the earth in ways, and she interpreted signs, she listened to her dreams and her intuition. My mother was a Witch, even if she refuses to admit it. It’s been 8 years since I decided to listen to the Spirits that where calling me, to follow the path of those who came before me and it has been a wild ride. The most exciting part is that I’m no where near done learning, I will always be learning and listening to the Spirits and Ancestors. I have always felt a deep connection in my bones to my ancestors and the path I’m being lead down, and knowing that my Great Grandparents on my fathers side came over here from Naples, Italy I’m starting to see that the practices, even though hidden, are there and very much alive in my blood. I have manifested THE SHIT out of my life, and it all started in my blood and from the very beginning, but from addiction, eating disorders, abusive relationships, PTSD from things I have been forced to see, anxiety, and whatever else life is throwing at me I know I can take it! I can handle all of it, dust myself off and keep moving because I have found my Rage in Power. We all can overcome ANYTHING, we just have to learn to use the tools we are given. From daily chants and prayers to weekly breath embodiment work and ritual trance dance, everything is possible.

Plant charming for the wild soul

I’ve spent so much time obsessing over plants,

about how to grow them, or how to connect with them, that I ended up not actually spending enough time with them. It’s been quite a few years since I started my path and I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for my extreme devotion to the plant realm. It runs deep in my blood, Italian Shamanic Healing is very centered around plants, and we don’t want to get me started in how much they are used in cooking. I remember being a young girl helping my mom in the garden, my mother taught me everything I know about plants and how to care for them. I would even spend my days at my baby sitters house playing “Witches” in her huge garden while picking blueberries right off the bush and eating them.

Every moment I spent in a garden or in the woods as a child was a Magical time for me, it opened up a whole new world for me. As I got older I cared less and less about the “Weird” side of myself, and focused on partying and hanging out with friends. In my teen years is when I was introduced to a whole new side of the Plant World. I had found a plant that literally washed all my problems away. That special magical plant took me all around the inner landscapes of my own mind! Spending time in my own head contemplating and judging everything. I think back at it now and I know my young mind was not able to comprehend the changes that where happening inside my very head, that being said I also know my experiences gave me an entire new outlook on life and how to live it.

Being older now and mother I look back and think about all my mistakes, but no matter how cringe worthy they are I would never take most of them back. One of my biggest mistakes was the day I stopped dancing. I was stuck in this mind set of “I’m too old to do things like dance and perform, I need to worry about being an adult, I need to let my never going to happen dreams fade!”. So that’s what I did, and let me just tell you I have never been so unhappy. The amount of loss I was feeling was something that couldn’t be named. I had no idea what I was searching for. I finally realized after a few horrible years of my life that I was searching for the Old Way, the way of my ancestors, the path of magic, mysticism, trance, ecstatic dance, healing, and spirit communication. Little did I realize that I had been practicing the Old Ways all along.

Being on this path that I am on is what really made my connection with plants “Zesty”, from talking and singing to plants to using them in every aspect of my Magick and Ancestral Healing, plants are apart of my everyday life. That is what led me to My Spiritual Break Through, why not bring two of my most Spiritual Practices together? Why not Dance With My Plants!

I feel like it was such and obvious concept, like this has to be something so Ancient, so Untamed, so Wild. All over the world, no matter what Spiritual Belief, all of our Ancestors communed with plants, they honored them, worked with them, and prayed to them. So someone some where must already do this.

The more I studied, the more I Danced, and practiced the more I realized that this concept is So much bigger then I thought! It was like a huge download of information was fluttering through my Body for almost 3 weeks straight. This is not just about Dancing with plants for their healing energy, or to raise a vibration, this is the Whole meaning of merging with a plants energy and Spirit. It was about being one with the Spirits from all around and being at one with the plants that you are connecting to. Your connecting so much so that your body’s are moving in sync.

I have noticed over my years of study in Witchcraft, The Occult, and Spirit Work, that when most people think of communicating with any Spirit it involves being very still, quiet, and calm, which is fine and it does work especially if you are learning to shift your energy focus and connect. But what if I told you that since the beginning of time people, especially Feminine Identified People, found Trance states in Breathe work and Movement. Over the past few decades more and more people are finally realizing that connection with spirit does not have to only be sitting still in a quiet room with 10 candles, incense, and waterfall recordings, which again is amazing and sounds so divine, but it’s not the only way. Finding connection to the Spirit Realm in Music and Dance has been something just about Every Culture has done at one point in time. When we really look into Shamanic practices from all over the world we can see the connection and how it relates to Dance and The Plant World.

How do you start Plant Charming

Let’s say your really feeling what I’m putting down, great! I thought you would. To answer your first question, No you do Not have to be a professional dancer to start Plant Charming. The most important part of this work is your love, dedication, and fiery untamed soul. Plants have an energy all their own and they are able to communicate with other plants, so all’s you have to do is open that bridge of communication. This may sound a little easier then it looks at first, to open up the true path of yourself and unlock everything that is holding you back. What does that mean exactly? This means you need to get weird, raw, and wild. The more we learn to let go of our self judgements, the easier it will be to open up the blockages in ourselves. We truly are the one thing that can hold us back. So we need to let loose, even if you have to take baby steps like putting on the loudest craziest music possible and shake like no one is watching, or hang out naked or in your underwear for a little bit before you get dressed in the morning, go skinny dipping, scream, howl, growl, and hiss while you practice breathing and being in your own body which will also bring you to an altered state of consciousness. Whatever you decide to do, know that every time you stop judging yourself, every time you don’t criticize yourself you are one step closer to healing your inner spirit and getting closer to the Spirit Realm.

After you’ve started to let loose then start thinking about having a Plant that heals you on or around you while your doing these wild letting go practices. You can pick any plant that resonates with you, gives you healing energy, empowers you, or a Plant that you just want to get to know better. A little more each day you will start to notice a difference, you will be building a connection. This practice does not necessarily need to be done every single day but the more you do it the more you get out of it.

When a connection is built between you and the Plant/Plants you will notice subtle ways your Plant Spirit Guides start to communicate with you, they will start guiding you in your life, your decisions, and teaching you things that you have never heard before. Plant guides can tend to be subtle at first, in my experience it seems as if they are making sure they can trust your intentions first for the amount of ancient wisdom they are going to share.

When Charming comes in

Having a relationship with your Plant Spirit Guides are no different then any other relationship, you care for them as they do you, you honor and respect them. Giving offerings and asking your Plant Spirit Guides what they like and want is always a good idea. They will answer you. The more time you spend with them and the more time spent practicing you will start finding out what ways you feel drawn to moving your body, and what type of music is calling you this will also help you decipher what type of healing you are in need of. Paying attention to how you feel in your body and where you’re the most reactive to the dance movements and music will show you a lot about yourself and the Plant Spirits. When we are “Charming” It’s to have done something as if by Magick. The word “Charm” originated from the Latin Word “Carmen” which translates to “Song, Verse, or Incantation”. We are literally Charming the Plant Spirits into Manifesting whatever healing and desires we need.

Charming a Plant is using Music and the Energy of Dance to Manifest changes in the Astral Realm. As we are Charming the Plant we are honing that energy to Manifest our desires as well as contacting the Plant Spirits and letting them know we are open to receiving what we are asking for. As Women and all People who have connected with their Divine Feminine side, we have this indispensable amount of Knowledge and Wisdom from our Ancestors and Lineage Bearers. Thousands of years ago, Women were the ones who kept everyone going, we knew how to find the healing and nourishing herbs in the forest and we knew how to gather them, while still appeasing the Spirits of the land. In today’s society Women have been knocked from The All Healing and Destructive Mother Earth to the companion or lover of a man. I truly know deep in my heart that we as Women and all Feminine Identified People, we have a choice to either Raise our Vibrations, connect with the Ancient Source of Knowledge and Wisdom, grow and learn from our shadows, and Manifest the best freaking life we deserve! Or live a lower vibrational life, not accepting our power or fulfilling our greatest desires.  I know and believe fully that it is All Possible, growing and connecting with the most Ancient of Spirits of them all, the Plant Spirits and Mother Earth. I hope that this brief introduction to Plant Charming sits with you well and will spark and Ancient Primal Fire within you so deep, that’s never to be put out again. Blessings to a new Era of Wild and Charmers.

The Medea mask

Prinsep, Valentine Cameron; Medea the Sorceress; Southwark Art Collection; http://www.artuk.org/artworks/medea-the-sorceress-193395

What is about being a strong Women that makes certain people act the way they do. Some Men and Women feel that putting a Strong Women down will some how stop them from taking up space in this world. The space they are meant to have. It’s almost like certain people are so scared to be outspoken and true to themselves that when they see a strong minded, wild and free Woman they get uncomfortable and jealous in a way so instead of doing better for themselves they choose to put her down and make her feel less then and turn against her.

Now you’re probably wondering “What does this have to do with Medea, the Mistress of Magick?”, Everything! This has everything to do with Medea my dear. Let me explain why. Now when most people hear the name Medea they might think “isn’t that the Witch who killed her kids!”, that’s if people know who she is at all. Medea has become more popular over the years and with popularity comes misunderstood hatred. Medea is by far one of the Most Misunderstood Witches in history. She is hated on left and right. Which if you look at most Women it seems to be a reoccurring pattern if they were different in any way, then they got hated on.

There are so many different versions of Medea’s story, most of them involve the killing of her children, but not all of them. There are a few that state sh0e was not the one to kill them and it was actually Jason’s men who stabbed the children. I have read and researched just about every version of her story I could find. One thing that always really struck me about her story is the amount of hatred I have seen towards her, when there are numerous Highly Venerated Spirits who where said to have done almost the exact same if not worse then what she was said to do. That being said one of the main things I had noticed was that most of the spirits who are venerated regardless of their awful acts were Men. Now why is it a Male spirit can get away with Rape, Murder, ect., and most people barely bat an eye, but a female spirit commits an awful crime and she is not suitable enough for veneration or honoring? It seems to me that we are all conditioned to believe in our society that a Women is only supposed to be seen as the Mother, the Wife, the forgiver, but Men live a life all their own throughout history and are seen as violent and cruel, and in some way Superior so no matter what they do it’s some how okay but for a Women she is doomed to live a life of failure and guilt for all eternity.

My point is not in any way shape or form that the murder of children is alright, as a mother of two, I would do anything for my children. Medea is The Shaman and Sorceress who has challenged the status quo, she has shown that Women can be strong, sexy, smart, loving, fierce, and unapologetically afraid to get revenge. Medea holds space as a part of the Divine Feminine that is wild and untamed, fierce and knowledgeable, she is a destroyer and creatrix, she is a spirit within so many Women. To hold within ourselves the spirit of a Powerful Misunderstood Woman, and to hone the power that comes with it is to accept and find the path to your own Feminine Rage.

It is said that after Medea owned her path and released the parts of her psyche that where holding her back mentally and physically, she ran off to Italy and changed her name to Angitia. There she lived as a Serpent Sorceress Goddess who was venerated and honored by the Marsi people. She was a Goddess of

Healing, Divination, and Magick. The Marsi People were Traveling Snake Charmers, Magicians, Sorcerers, and Healers. They come from the land of Witchcraft around Lake Fucin imagined o which was drained in the nineteenth century a.d., the area is now called San Benedetto dei Marsi.

When you really look at Medea’s story and life and you see where she started to where she ended up I’m sure I am not alone when I say she lives a life of many Women. Understanding the different archetypes in each of us is the key to our many powers. Medea started as a silenced young woman forced to live the life that was made for her. Then came something excitingly unexpected and she put all of her heart and power into having what she wanted, but being with Jason only ended with him betraying her. It would almost be crazy to assume that every one of us has not felt this kind of pain and hurt, to feel trapped all your life and think you have finally found your way out just to get screwed in the end. In our younger years we usually have some sort of path being laid out for us that we choose to rebel against for better or worse, as we rebel to take on a life of our own we don’t always make the smartest decisions. Those decisions we made no matter good or bad helped shaped who we are, the people we have interacted and chose to spend time with have even played a part in our energy. As we realize these things we see the mask we held on to for so long, realizing what mask we wear is the first step to releasing them.

Medeas story is one of constant shedding and transformation, it’s no wonder she is so closely connected to the Serpent. To truly let go of our past we must come face to face with it, whether we choose to write things that happened down, or paint pictures of major events in our lives. No matter your choice of expression you are making art, art that will bring you closest to what is holding you back and let you release it. One of my personal choices of expression is to Dance. Dance, move, and gyrate, every incident and action of my life that needs to come to a head, everything I have never dealt with or expressed I was angry about, everything that has put me down and made me feel less then will no longer have control of me, I will control it!

As you get more used to expressing your crossroads in an art form, no matter what that form Is, you will feel almost instantly more confident about yourself and your choices. Do your art expression on a somewhat daily / bi-daily basis if you can, get in a groove solely dedicated to you. There is no step by step guide to removing these mask, it is a process and it will be hard at first but when you are able to fully embody every part of yourself it will be worth it.

Medea has made it very clear in my path and life that it is not possible to be Fully Awake to the Other Realm with out having been through your share of pain and trauma, it’s what you do with this trauma that really counts. You can let it swallow you whole or you can use it to fight and go after what you where born to have. I choose to fight every day, I will dance, scream, paint, make music, spell cast, Channel my spirit guides, write, and grow everyday. I will declare what my day will hold. I will grow into my abilities as a Shape Shifter, and I will shift the energies all around me as I am guided by Medea. I declare these things to myself daily, sometimes twice a day so I stay in the energetic path I am supposed to immerse myself in.  Making sure you declare what you want will help attract the life you want to live and shed the life you don’t. Growing with ourselves and learning more about embodying every part of our being will transform us in ways you never would of possible.

I wrote this because Medea is always with me, as she transforms into Angitia she works with and through me to transform every part into a powerful aspect of myself, to call on the ancient power. To call on Medea is to call on one of the most Ancient of Sorceresses, and she is ready to teach those who are worthy and put in the time to grow in every way. As you shed and stay true to you Medea will be watching over you, she will be drawn to you.

May the old Feminine Sorceresses grow and the Old Goddesses help us through so we too can one day  transform in ultimate wisdom and knowledge.
